And so it begins…

I like a good picture. I think we all do. There is something about a good photo that tickles a part of the human brain that I love. Over the next few months I want to become better at taking pictures. I want to become a better photographer.

About a year ago I bought my first DSLR. I have taken some nice photos with it,  you can see some of them here. I have rarely ventured off of the automatic mode. There is so much more that can be done with the aperture, shutter speed and ISO. There is so much behind these different parameters.

I have something else that always peaks my interest: science. Whether it’s the weather and why clouds are moving the way they are or the optics that go into taking a good picture, I love to think about the world behind what we see. I will explore what the aperture, shutter speed and ISO do to an image and the physics behind that

I will also endeavour to explain the science of what is in front of the lens. For example this song sparrow that I photographed outside Newport, Oregon. This area was full of dense low bush which this species love. It was probably in the process of hunting as there were many bugs out that day. Alternatively, it could have been threatened as it was making several calls, possibly trying to draw attention away from its nest.

These are the kind of thoughts that I want to encourage through this blog. I want to show the depth behind what we see every day.

Through this blog I want to show both my progression as a photographer as well as the science behind and in front of the pictures I take. Hopefully we can all begin to see the science in the beauty around us.

All photos were taken by me and are open for reuse with attribution.
